The plum-lacquered piers supporting the wenge top of this coffee table are hollow spars: a flexible plywood skin over ply ribs, like an aircraft wing. It reminds me of a character in Chinese  calligraphy. The stretcher, also wenge, seen in the detail, is let into the piers and secured with concealed hardware.
