All elements come from one slab of walnut, of my clients' choosing. Lowering a skilsaw into the plank for the first rough cut was fraught, howsoever sharp the blade may have been. No do-overs here... I must cite George Nakashima on this piece; over the years I've come to appreciate his esthetic (complex simplicity?): it's not your roadside-stand redwood burl. We have a portion of the slab left, destined to become an entryway bench for shoe removal.
